Dr. Luís Costa is a Professor of Medicine and a highly experienced physician scientist at the University of Lisbon Medical School. At this medical school, he initiated a new medical learning unit, the Oncobiology, that aims to teach the understanding of clinical oncology through molecular medicine.

He is also the Head of the Oncology Department at Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon, the Director of the Clinical Research Center at Lisbon Medical Academic Center, and Head of the Clinical Translational Oncology Research Unit at Instituto de Medicina Molecular. Over the past few decades, Dr. Costa has been particularly interested in breast cancer and has made substantial contributions to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression to distal metastatic sites by using bone metastasis as a paradigm. In addition, Dr. Costa continues to lead multiple phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials in patients with breast cancer and other solid tumors.

As a subject matter expert, Dr. Costa is active on extramural peer-review panels at the European Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the French National Cancer Institute, and the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Dr. Costa has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and manuscripts in mainstream scientific journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, The Breast, The Oncologist, Annals of Oncology, Nature Clinical Practice Oncology, Nature Primer Diseases, and The Lancet Oncology.
