Miguel Martin is a Medical Oncologist based in Madrid, Spain. Since 1990, Dr. Martin has focused exclusively on breast cancer research and treatment. He is a Professor of Medicine at the Complutense University and currently serves as Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañon in Madrid. He received his medical degree from the University of Valladolid and completed his fellowship and residency at the San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid. In 1989, he obtained the European Certification in Medical Oncology in London. In 1990-1991, Prof. Martin visited the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle (EEUU), where he worked on high-dose chemotherapy with bone marrow transplantation for breast cancer. He has served as editor of several medical journals and as a member of the International Editorial Board of the journal Lancet Oncology, as well as other international journals (European Journal of Clinical & Medical Oncology, Cancer & Chemotherapy Reviews). In 1995, Prof. Martin created GEICAM (Spanish Group for Breast Cancer Research), a network involving more than 140 Spanish institutions. Since its foundation, he has served as the Group’s Chairman. GEICAM has conducted more than 120 clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies in breast cancer. Since 2001, Prof. Martin has served on the Board of Directors and the Scientific Steering Committee of TRIO, an international not-for-profit clinical research organization operating in 45 countries. Prof. Martin has published more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He has contributed to more than 300 presentations at international medical meetings and has delivered invited lectures in several countries worldwide.

He is a full member of several scientific societies: ASCO, ESMO, SEOM, ASBD, EBMT, ABMT, and MASCC. Prof. Martin served as the Spanish representative to ESMO from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he was appointed European Liaison of the International Affairs Committee of ASCO. He has served on the panel of the International Consensus Conference on Early Breast Cancer (St. Gallen). He is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the Early Breast Cancer Trialists’ Cooperative Group (Oxford, UK). In 2012, Dr. Martin was appointed an Advisor to the Spanish Ministry of Health. He was appointed a Board Member of the National Committee of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (2013). In June 2014, he was named a reviewer for the ANEP. In March 2015, Prof. Miguel Martin was named a Numerary Academic by the Spanish Medical Surgery Academy. From October 2015 to December 2017, Dr. Martin served as President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology. The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) bestowed its prestigious 2017 ESMO Award on Miguel Martín as a Breast Cancer Expert and for his contribution to the development of medical oncology. He was awarded the Premio Obieta by the Royal Spanish Academy of Medicine for the best professional career in December 2017. In 2028, he received the AstraZeneca Award for Scientific Excellence. In 2024, he was appointed an Honorary Member of the Real Academia de Medicina de Valladolid. Since 2024, Dr. Martin has been an Emeritus Professor of Oncology at Universidad Complutense in Madrid.
