From Surviving to Thriving
How Breast Cancer Changed My Life and Inspired Me to Help Others.
I was 41 years old and a busy Finance executive and mother of 6-yr old twins when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily, it was caught early so after three surgeries, including a double mastectomy, I was declared in remission. I had the chance to have a very strong support system, first in my family and close friends, but I also benefited from the amazing help and resources offered by my local breast cancer coalition. Breast cancer changed my life. First, it turned it upside down, forcing me to put everything on hold and (re)focus on myself to “get back on the other side”. Then, as the pieces slowly started to fall back into place, I realized how much my priorities had changed. I became fearless. I launched my own startup, developing and manufacturing a bed recliner to help women during their recovery post-mastectomy. I also started volunteering for the same breast cancer coalition that had offered me amazing emotional support when I needed it the most. I knew firsthand the importance of having a support system and I was eager to give back and help other women facing a breast cancer diagnosis – because no woman should walk that road alone. I am now very involved in the world of breast cancer in many ways. It has been extremely rewarding to help others and know that I am making a difference, every day.
