Dr. Artefaa Al-Shamari is a trailblazer in breast cancer surgery, recognized as the first Qatari oncoplastic breast surgeon at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). A graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), she has devoted her career to transforming breast cancer care by combining surgical expertise with patient-centered innovation. As the Head of the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Unit and Associate Program Director of the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship, she plays a critical role in advancing surgical techniques and mentoring the next generation of specialists in Qatar. Her leadership also includes organizing major educational initiatives as the Chairwoman of the Qatar Oncoplastic and Reconstruction Conference (QBRC), which fosters regional and international collaboration in breast surgery.
Beyond her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Al-Shamari is a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness and patient support. She is the Founder and Chair of the Qatar Breast Cancer Association (QBCA) and the Founder of the Pink Supportive Group, both aimed at empowering women, promoting early detection, and providing comprehensive support for patients and survivors. Acknowledging her commitment to cancer awareness, she serves as an Ambassador for the Qatar Cancer Society, where she actively helps shape national breast cancer policies. She also represents Qatar in the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (Switzerland), engaging in global discussions to enhance surgical techniques and patient care.
Dr. Al-Shamari’s dedication to excellence extends beyond medicine into leadership and strategic development. With a Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership, she integrates visionary planning with her medical expertise to drive advancements in breast cancer research, education, and patient advocacy. As a member of the American College of Surgeons – Qatar Chapter and the Qatari Doctors Society, she remains at the forefront of surgical advancements, consistently working to improve patient outcomes. A sought-after mentor, speaker, and thought leader, Dr. Al-Shamari is committed to shaping the future of oncoplastic surgery, enhancing breast cancer awareness, and promoting the outreach mission of the BCYW Foundation in Qatar and beyond.
