Dr. Fisher is a Professor and Chairman of Human and Molecular Genetics and holds the Thelma Newmeyer Corman Chair in Cancer Research in the VCU School of Medicine, Richmond, VA. He is also Emeritus Professor, Departments of Pathology, Neurosurgery and Urology, Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, NY. Dr. Fisher has published over 650 papers and reviews, is among the top NIH/NCI-funded investigators and has 55 issued patents. He pioneered novel gene/discovery approaches (including subtraction hybridization, RSDD, DISH), developed innovative therapeutic approaches (cancer therapeutic viruses, therapeutic cytokines [MDA-7/IL-24]), presented numerous named and distinguished lectures, and founded several startup companies. He was Virginia Outstanding Scientist of 2014, Fellow of the National Foundation for Cancer Research, and elected to the National Academy of Inventors in 2018. Dr. Fisher is a successful seasoned entrepreneur. He founded GenQuest Incorporated, a functional genomics company, that merged with Corixa Corporation in 1998, traded on NASDAQ, and was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in 2006. He cofounded InVaMet Therapeutics (IVMT), developing small molecule inhibitors of metastasis, and InterLeukin Combinatorial Therapies (ILCT), moving therapeutic interleukins/cytokines from bench-to-bedside.
