Pranela Rameshwar, PhD

Professor of Medicine
Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine, Newark, New Jersey, USA

Dr. Rameshwar is a senior Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine. She is an accomplished breast cancer scientist with decades of research on bone marrow diseases, particularly focusing on how breast cancer cells survive in bone marrow as dormant/sleeping cells. She is passionate for this research area mostly due to the ability of these dormant cancer cells to transition into tertiary metastasis decades after remission. More importantly, since treatment does not deter breast cancer cells from continuing to evade treatment and to survive as dormant cancer stem cells, discerning the complex process within the bone marrow is important. The outcome of Dr. Rameshwar’s research will allow a safe treatment for young women and a prolonged lifelong remission if the patient is diagnosed with breast cancer during early years of life.
