Insights, Predictions, and Pathways for Interventions to Address Rising Breast Cancer Incidence in Young Women
The WHO predicts that BCYW will continue to increase globally until 2040, with an average onset age of around 33.62 years globally (and 33.88 for India and 34.26 for the US). This projection suggests that many young women diagnosed in 2040 will be around plus-17 years in 2024. This offers us a clear window for intervention through targeted awareness at the grassroots and the early diagnosis of the disease. To kickstart conversations on prevention and raise awareness among youth and young women and the community, the BCYW Foundation has published an article, “Understanding the Rising Breast Cancer Among Young Women: Biological Insights, Projections, and an Opportunity Window Leading up to 2040” in the Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology. It explores possible causes beyond genetic factors (which only explain about 10-15% of cases) and discusses what makes breast cancer in young women different from cases in older women. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding how lifestyle, environment, genetics, and hormonal changes can increase the risk of breast cancer from puberty onwards. The press releases, which are in English and Hindi, were picked by over 268 and 100 independent media and news channels, respectively.

What is causing this increase that we have yet to understand fully? Many unresolved questions in the field need more research, i.e., the nature of molecular changes of predictive and therapeutic value, what triggers these changes, and how to predict which healthy young women may develop breast cancer later in life. As we wait for the answers, it is vital to keep young women informed about relevant advances across the globe. Therefore, the BCYW Foundation has launched an educational series called #HerBreastCareInsights. These insights hold significant importance in saving the lives of young women from breast cancer.
